InstaTIP: 3 minutes on why rest is important

12. January 2023

1. When it comes to the body, it is not only important why rest is important, but the type of rest is also key. Physical rest has two components: active and passive. Passive rest is sleep, relaxation or sweet idleness on the couch. Active physical rest includes activities such as yoga, stretching, massages, but also using an ergonomic chair at work. If this component is missing in your life, it can have very visible and quite unpleasant symptoms, such as pain or swollen legs.

2. Deep sleep is not just a form of rest, but also a key physiological function. Sleepless nights not only make it difficult to perform tasks the next day, but also have a bad effect on health and the functioning of the organism as a whole. Lack of sleep can cause memory disorders, concentration problems, irritability, mood swings and depression, and also weakens the immune system.

3. Mental fatigue is an everyday phenomenon. Contrary to the misconception that "it's all about will", the onset of mental exhaustion does not require something big to happen. It is enough if you have a little more work, your schedule is a little tighter, or you have to make several not entirely insignificant decisions in a short time. Mental fatigue can lead to you starting to do everything more superficially, less thoughtfully, and being more inclined to choose the easier path, even if it won't be as effective.

4. Insufficient sleep also disrupts the balance of hormones that regulate appetite and satiety. This means an increased risk of night snacking and can easily lead to overweight.
